This is also where we digitize family photo albums and conduct oral history interviews as part of our commitment to preserving Miami’s diverse community memories. Families are invited to bring their photographs, stories, and documents to Studio 42, where they are scanned, recorded, and archived with care. These materials often become part of our digital archive, exhibitions, or educational content—ensuring that everyday lives and voices are not lost to time, but instead honored and made accessible for future generations.
The Bureau’s Historic Research Laboratory is a dynamic workspace dedicated to uncovering, preserving, and interpreting Miami’s layered history. Located at Bakehouse Art Complex, Studio 42, the lab is staffed by Malcolm Laredo and collaborators and is equipped with over 800 volumes on South Florida history, as well as tools for document digitization, oral history recording, and 3D scanning. It serves as the research engine behind The Bureau’s exhibitions, video projects, mobile installations, and public programming—supporting everything from community archives to museum-grade interpretations of local sites.
The lab is fully outfitted with high-powered computers, drones (including FPV and photogrammetry-capable models), a 3D scanner, portable book scanners, projectors for large-scale displays, a 360 camera, professional-grade video camera, and an expanding suite of VR equipment including a Meta Quest 3 and headset systems. A 3D printer and additional field tools round out the setup, making the lab capable of producing immersive multimedia experiences, precise historic models, and educational tools. Whether designing a digital archive, recording oral histories, or developing an exhibition, the Historic Research Laboratory enables The Bureau to fuse cutting-edge technology with rigorous historical inquiry.

Make it stand out.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
